I can’t say I enjoyed the movie but I will say there was just enough to
admire that I’m glad I watched it. Maria Callas was not a sympathetic
character, at least not in this movie. But at least the film offered
snippets of gorgeous opera performances that used the actual voice of Maria
Callas while Angelina Jolie lip-synched. The cinematography was impressive
throughout and often stunning. It was all very beautiful to look at and
listen to and Angelina nJolie turned in a magnificent performance. But I
never connected with Maria Callas enough to care about the suffering
artist. As a child she was impoverished and abused, and she rose to become
a cold and abusive woman who conquered the world of opera. How nice for
her. Watching Bob Dylan rise to the top was a whole lot more fun.
