Post by RichAIts an interesting point. DVD, movies on demand, etc, may be giving us
a false picture of the popularity of Hollywood. Sure, overall dollars
are up,
year upon year, but only because buying movies in various forms is so
easy. Movies in the home now function as "background noise" to have on

I never watch a film as "background noise." That's reserved for baseball
perhaps, or one of the news channels. Do people really watch films in that
manner? Film as a medium (as well as a DVD) demands focused attention.
That explains why people get annoyed at the cinema when others *do* treat
the film as background to their primary goal of talking, checking their
cell, or obliviously opening a cellophane candy wrapper.
I saw "Mulholland Falls" for the first time last night. I'm not a huge
Lynch fan, but it was intriguing and Watts is gorgeous. Anyway, a lot was
going on in that film and I can't imagine getting much out of the experience
if I had been distracted.
